It amazes me how someone can ask me my race, let me respond and all so they can proceed to tell me how Im wrong about MY racial identity... Im Greek, Black, Indian and Mexican and YES it is possible. Does the term multi-racial make you more comfortable with who I am? Would identifying myself as ONE of the races that make me ME, make you feel better? I think my future response will be, What makes you more comfortable? Over the years Ive been told Im not dark enough to be Indian, that my hairs not kinky enough to be Black, or talk about how my southern accent is too American to be Greek. Recently, someone went as far as saying that Im too ashamed to learn my culture to be identifying myself as Mexican, or part-Mexican with an emphasis on the latter. The truth is I am WHO I am. I dont have have to justify WHAT I am. I am a human being, just like you. Thats WHAT I am. The only real difference between us is that my family history shows that I was born into a family of open-mindedness and security, not one of prejudice and judgement. I know my history, a history that I learn more and more about each day. I am proud of that history, not just the parts that are convenient for me to throw out there to try and fit in, (admittedly, that comment was novel). Thank you for being so concerned about little ole me, someone youve just met, that youd feel the need to educate me on MYSELF, but let me say on behalf of me, I dont need YOUR education. I am from a family of STRONG women that taught me that the color of my skin, the hair on my head, and the sound of my voice dont make me any more or less valuable than the next woman. Educating myself, Being honest, caring about people, treating others with RESPECT and COMPASSION, loving my family, and being a child of God, THOSE are a few of the MANY things that make me valuable. I appreciate your two cents but you can keep it, Im rich enough! ~ RoseAnna Roshanni
