It bothers me that we are a society where capitalism is king, yet a lot of the important work is being done for free. For example, my colleagues and I lead nature hikes regularly for free. We produce beautiful nature guides and plant identification resources on our free time and give them away to the public for free. We present our science and research to the general public on our free time, for free. Those who do make a living doing these things usually struggle to stay solvent. I am not asking to be paid, for we do it out of passion and our love of nature. Sharing it with the world is the most important thing. But it is frustrating that something so important is not valued in the way our economic system is currently set up.
