It has always been an intention of mine to offer different solutions to defending and organizing your team. The Near post has become so feared by all goalkeepers. Dont be beat near post You should never be beat there Thus forcing us into safe and negative positions. Think about this: Standing touch tight to the near post prevents A correct or effective dive should the ball travel towards the near A chance of intercepting 75% of crosses across the POMO area (Position of Most Opportunity) Defenders keeping the area clear for you to attack any cross that is slid played across the POMO area As much as Goalkeepers have the NEVER be beat near post ingrained in them from day one Attackers or crosses have had NEVER Shoot near post You must always cross the ball from this angle or shoot across goal So essentially both goalkeepers and attackers are playing a ridiculous game of Cat and Mouse As an example: Goalkeeper: I am going to stand really close to my near post so you cant shoot Crosser/Attacker: Well I am going to NEVER shoot there anyway as my coach said cross it or shoot across goal The stigma of being beat near post has created an age of cautious and Self preservation Goalkeepers As it is commonly accepted that Goalkeepers are Mad, Nutters, eccentric and more often than not BRAVE Lets start being brave in our positioning aswell as our sheer headlong diving at feet. I have taken this opportunity to further emphasize my ethos on this skill and technique. The video below was compiled using clips from a session with Chelmsford City FC scholars on Friday 21st November 2014. For the purpose of attempting to recreate the various scenarios when the ball is crossed from the byline. We have shown the positioning of the conventional dont be beat at the near post and then shown the position that I have coached for the last 6 years. Any captions throughout the video in RED are deemed to be negative comments or faults/errors in positioning or actions and those in white or black are to reinforce the points I am trying to make. Keen to have opinions on this. I am sure it will cause divided ones but the video for me gives conclusive evidence that this technique implemented correctly and with the support of your team coaches and managers is extremely successful and will change the way you defend in these situations. I expect your success rate to go up and % of goals conceded from these areas will decrease dramatically.
