It has been a joy to watch so many people participate in the #icebucketchallenge to build awareness for ALS. As some of you may know, my dad, Michael Angelina, passed away 14 years ago from this disease at age 48. He went through hell and back as his disease progressed and it really is one of the scariest things ever to watch as the disease takes over someone you love. Since I know 90% of you won’t click on the link to learn more about ALS, I will give you a quick summary of what it is…. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain. As their motor neurons continuously die, the brain is no longer able to control muscle movement. This causes the person to be immobile in all aspects and to rely on a caretaker to pretty much do everything for them. They lose the muscles used for speech and can then rely on technology to communicate for them. THERE IS NO CURE TO ALS. So I ENCOURAGE everyone to donate to their page – the money will go to research and trials that will hopefully lead to a breakthrough, or technology and equipment for the patients suffering. My family would have never gotten through this time if it weren’t for the support of others. BE the support for these ALS victims and their families even if it is a small donation or doing the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness! Last but not least, as you post a video, keep in mind that it is not just about having your video on social media, dumping ice water on your head, or joining the new “fad”.
