It has been said that there are no coincidences in life, just minor miracles that God chooses to not take credit for. I am amazed how God helps us during challenging times by placing others in our in our path just at our time of need. It has happened many times in my life. I am humbled to feel that on occasion he has used me to help someone in a small way. Two weeks ago on a flight to South Africa, during the middle of the flight/night, I felt prompted to get up and stretch my legs. As I rounded the corner I saw a woman lying on the floor. Next to her was her husband, a Dr. from South Africa and several flight attendants. I asked if I could be of assistance. After telling them that I was a nurse, I was asked to stay. I visited with the husband and discovered that they were on their way to South Africa to visit their son who was in critical condition in an ICU there after having a bleed into his brain. The young man was serving as a missionary for our church. It turned out that the couple live not far from us in Davis county and are related to a neighbor of mine. After some time and a blessing from Russell and the husband, the woman became arousable and the couple returned to their seats. Afterward the flight attendant asked the Dr. why he wasnt sitting in business class. He stated that he had tried but there were no seats left. He then said he must have been needed in economy as this woman had dropped down right in front of his feet. Why did I get up just when I did? I think this couple needed a friend from home to visit with. Sadly, I was just informed yesterday that their son, the young missionary, passed away in South Africa. Both the young man and his parents have been in our prayers for the last two weeks. For some reason the experience really touched my heart. While I cannot imagine what it must be like to be in their shoes, I too grieved at the couples loss. Yet I know that their son is with our Lord and Savior in a much better place now. I know that they will be reunited with him someday and feel his arms around them again. It is hard to understand sometimes why things happen the way they do. But our prophet Thomas S. Monson has said The Lord knows your trials. He knows your victories. And if you will “trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding [but] in all thy ways acknowledge him, … he shall direct thy paths” (Prov. 3:5–6).
