It has come to my attention that there is a huge chunk of people that seem to think that raising the minimum wage is some kind of outrageous move they are offended by. Ive heard a lot of arguments attempting to make a valid points as to why they disagree with it, but none have added up to me. Lets start with this. The rate at which cost of living has risen, and the value of the dollar has dropped far exceeds the rate of wage increases. So the people that are making minimum wage get poorer and poorer every year. The dollar does not go as far as it used to. Inflation. I really dont see how anyone can think its ok to leave the minimum wage at a fixed place once you factor this in... This is really the only piece of evidence or information I think a person needs to understand why minimum wage has to go up every so often..... But some people are selfish and cant look past themselves. They worry that cost of living across the board will go up because of this. If that upsets you, take your anger out on corporate America, because they will be the parties responsible for driving costs up. Companies are making HUGE profit margins by paying people wages they cant actually make a living on. They can afford to pay their employees a fair wage, and lose out on a small percentage of their profits. Dont put the blame on people just trying to make a living. Stand up to the corporations and realize that they actually have the power to keep the products and services you need at a cost that you can afford, and still pay a decent wage to their workers, they are just greedy and will try to make the customer foot the bill. Now, I also noticed that a huge chunk of people seem to be under the delusion that only teenage fast food workers make minimum wage, and thats ok because they dont deserve a high wage anyway. Jobs like that are meant to be starter jobs, and its ok for those kinds of people to make that wage. Wrong! 25 % of americans make less then $10/hour. 15% of americans are considered poverty level income Its not just fast food workers that make that wage, and even it was, its still not a fair wage once you factor in the inflation that has already happened. Here are some examples of people that typically make minimum wage. Really think about this and consider how many people you cross paths with that fall under these categories. -The person ringing you up at almost any cash register you buy things at -The person cooking your food at typical restaurants -Warehouse workers that are responsible for you getting packages shipped to you. -Factor line workers Now, heres some jobs that might surprise you, but these positions have been reported to pay as low as minimum wage..... - EMT -Pharmacy Tech -Certified Nurse Assistant -preschool teacher -lifeguard -babysitter -mechanic -Tax preparation agent Now, does a different picture start to form..... ? Tons of Americans that are trusted with fairly important tasks are paid poverty level income. So now the next order of business is, the people that feel like its unfair to give those unskilled Workers a pay boost, because they will making as much as others who have worked harder..... Look, companies will have to offer more competitive wages for positions that require more specific skill sets, training/education, or experience. Thats how it goes ! If the minimum wage goes up, then companies pay more to experienced, educated workers to keep them on. Its a trickle effect that will take time, but it will happen. Lastly... this point of Your not supposed to be able to make a living off minimum wage jobs .... Modern Purpose In modern times, minimum wage law serves the purpose of establishing a living wage--mostly for lower-class families that depend on the manual labor jobs which often pay the least. The federal minimum wage usually equates to a yearly salary that falls below the poverty line, according to Dollars and Sense. In 2008, for example, minimum wage brought a person $15,080 if he worked 40 hours a week--less than the $17,333 poverty line. Yes... Yes you are. Because over 50 million Americans are scraping by, doing just that, because thats the only option they have. Regardless of how you may think things are supposed to go, and how things are meant to be... The reality is that a huge chunk of the american workforce is busting their ass, living paycheck to paycheck, supporting families, and making poverty level income. Raising the minimum wage is a socially conscious & responsible thing to do. Imagine if they hadnt raised the minimum wage since 1990 ($3.80/hour) Im not even going to go any further with that, if you cant see the point, then your disconnected from what its like to financially struggle. As the value of the dollar drops, the minimum wage has to rise to match that. Its simple economics. The minimum wage should not dictate the value of the dollar, the value of the dollar should dictate the minimum wage. Normally I dont like to get my information from the big G, but I actually do support them on this particular subject, so ... read up dol.gov/minwage/mythbuster.htm
