It is Oregon Wine Month. Celebrate each week with the Edgefield wine of your choice...or sample this weeks special pick for $7 per glass. This week we are featuring our 2013 Pinot Gris. Dont forget to get your special passport stamp while you are here! Vineyard: 100% Rebecca’s Vineyard, Umpqua Valley OR. Rebecca’s is small family farmed vineyard, just south of the newly designated Elkton AVA in Sourthern Oregon. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir and a tiny bit of Muscat are grown there and are typically floral, delicate and retain great acidity and balance. Tasting Notes: The 2013 vintage Pinot Gris is pale gold in color and has fruit aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple and papaya accompanied by hints of honey and floral chamomile like aromas. On the palate it is smooth and creamy, with ripe pear, mandarin orange and apple flavors. It is medium bodied, with moderate acidity that makes it the perfect wine to enjoy both as an aperitif or with a light meal. Best served only lightly chilled. Food Pairing: Foods that best complement our 2012 Pinot Gris are delicately flavored white meats and fish, such as grilled chicken or grilled shrimp. Try it with salads with light vinaigrettes, fresh pesto, and pasta dishes as well. Fun Facts: ‘Pinot’ means pinecone, which refers to the Pinot family’s pinecone-shaped grape clusters. A mutant clone of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris (“gray Pinot”) has reddish-purple skin, thus being between the “black” Pinot (Noir) and “white Pinot (Blanc). Although the grape is originally from Northeastern France, it is also commonly found in both Germany and Northeastern Italy. In Italy, it is known as Pinot Grigio. Although the name (and wine style) might be slightly different from its French and German incarnations, it is the same grape.
