It is a serious thing to accuse a man of murder and in the absence - TopicsExpress

It is a serious thing to accuse a man of murder and in the absence of more substantial evidence we cannot say for certain that Adeeb is behind the disappearance of the journalist, Rilwan. One thing is certain, though - journalists who write about Adeeb are given threats and are extremely wary of writing about him. I had this experience. Back at the beginning of this year when Jabir was convicted and sentenced to jail one day before the parliamentary election campaign began and the conviction and sentencing came less than two hours after the issuing of summons, it was clear that something was amiss. My inquiries revealed that a day earlier Jabir had, as the Chair of the Finance Committee, issued a summons to Adeeb in connection with an inquiry relating to alleged corruption. I was told that Adeeb had called back and warned him, kaley hey aruvaalaanamey. Within 24 hours of that threat, Jabir was in jail. My inquiries also yielded a copy of the original draft hukum which was vastly different from the sudden hukum of that day. Now, I am not going to get into how the judge who rendered that verdict was, within three months, appointed as the Prosecutor General and how Adeeb was behind getting him appointed. That is not the point. The point is, as things go in Maldives, a journalist came to know that I had access to certain key information and asked for an interview. During the conversation, I told him that I suspected Adeeb was behind it and showed him what I had. He told me that he had received many threats warning him not to write about the Minister and as such was very wary of going public with anything on him. We agreed that it was best the information be kept to ourselves. That was about 6 months before journalist Rilwans disappearance and it was clear that back then too, journalists didnt have an easy time writing about Minister Adeeb.
