It is difficult to label Islam apostasy or heresy. Both are fitting because (1) Islam is apostate because it falls from the Christian faith by going back and saying there is no New Covenant founded in the Messiah, whereas (2) it is heretical because though it believes Jesus is the Messiah and the Word, it rejects His divinity and rejects several other Christian doctrines. I would say Islam falls under the camp of apostasy because while Islam does believe Jesus is the Messiah and the Word and yet rejects several Christian doctrines, it denies a fundamental tenet of Christianity being that Christ founded a New Covenant. It is thus logical to say Islam -- like Rabbinical Judaism -- is an apostate religion.
