It is official, several weeks after speculation about the move started circulating. The River Cats have dumped the As in favor the Giants. As management is on record saying they wanted to stay with Sacramento, but the River Cats management wasnt interested. It appears the Cats were determined to become the Giants AAA team for some time. Why did the River Cats want to switch affiliation? They say its clear there are more Giants fans than As fans in Sacramento, and they think that will mean more fans coming to Raley Field. Why did the Giants leave Fresno, the previous home of their AAA franchise, for Sacramento? Proximity. Sacramento is closer to San Francisco than Fresno, and Sacramento has a better airport, so it will be easier for the Giants to move players between the big club and the AAA club. What does the switch mean for local baseball fans? As fans I have heard from are not very happy, but Giants fans are excited about the possibility of cheering for their guys at Raley Field. In their long association with the River Cats, the As almost always fielded a very good AAA team. The Giants AAA team did not enjoy nearly as much success over the same period of time. If that trend continues, it will be interesting to see if the name Giants will draw more fans to Raley Field than a championship caliber As affiliated team. River Cats management seems to be betting on it.
