It is was sadness that I report the passing of Fisk alumnus Dr. Eric K. Wood 76. We extend sympathies to his wife Thomasena also a Fisk alumn, and to their entire family. Growing up Dr. Eric K. Wood Sr. watched his father in his career as a well respected General Dentist, who also taught at Meharry Medical College for over thirty years. After high school he continued his education at Fisk University. He received his undergraduate degree and met his beautiful wife Thomasena, They were married in 1977. As a young student decisions on a career are never easy. Many of his peers encouraged him to go into medicine but his dental roots led him to begin dental school. Dr. Wood earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. Many assumed he would follow his father’s footsteps but he was led to navigate a path all his own. During his time in the National Health Service Core he determined that children’s oral health was his passion. At his pediatric residency Dr. Wood was known by the staff and other physicians for playing with the children with a stuffed toucan. Dr. Wood completed his pediatric dentistry training at Emory University/Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was given the toucan as a gift as a reminder of his time spent at Emory. The toucan remains as our logo as an expression of the principles and disciplines Dr. Wood continues to practice today. When he returned to Nashville after his pediatric residency he opened up a small pediatric practice over his father’s garage but dedicated most of his time to working at the Metro Nashville Health Department. Before he knew it he was made the Director of the Oral Health Division, Metropolitan Health Department. He was compelled not to stop there. The first office of his own was in a building located on 12th Avenue South in Nashville, TN. When the building owners decided to sell the building Dr. Wood decided to open up a pediatric practice in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Life moved quickly for the Wood family. Dr. Wood was a clinical instructor, at Meharry Medical College Department of Pediatric Dentistry and before he knew it they were taking over the office of Dr. Owens downtown in Nashville, TN and creating another branch of Wood Childrens Dentistry. Wood Children’s Dentistry now is named Associated Children’s Dentistry. We are blessed with three locations Goodlettsville, Downtown Nashville and Mount Juliet. Wood Children’s Dentistry may have changed its’ name but excellent dental care continues to be a family affair.
