It is with tremendous excitement—and butterflies in my stomach—that I announce a major evolution of my business. Nearly eight years ago with the birth of my first daughter I picked up a camera and started taking photos, having no concept of what was ahead. This was just before digital photography was “all the rage,” and like so many others, I fell in love with the emotion and science of the discipline. The ascent that followed took me by surprise, and introduced me to people and places that have blessed me beyond measure. In countless interviews people would ask me, “How did you do it?” While that’s a weighty question that takes some unpacking, the most important variable was that I was driven by something beyond the final product. That has always been my platform and my thesis. For me, it was never about “the perfect photo,” but rather every relationship I made along the way. Now, I’m watching my first class of senior girls get married and graduate from college. We do life together. That’s what my business is about. While running the business and the day-to-day was a blast, it was also a means to an end: personally enrich the lives of teen girls; show them how beautiful they are inside and out. Beauty within. For the past year, something new has been stirring in me. Whenever I get “that” feeling, I know it’s time to pay attention. After many months of listening to my gut, and understanding the vision welling up in me, it’s time to announce the next generation of my business. While it’s scary, important things don’t happen without taking a leap. This evolution isn’t about publicity, or profit, or personal exposure, and that’s so refreshing I can barely stand it! Instead, it’s about finding heartache in the hearts of young girls, and helping to heal it. It’s called “Beauty Within.” No surprise there, right? ☺ I will be using my camera in a new way, telling layered stories and revealing inner beauty with a like-minded team working alongside me. While I will offer senior portrait photography on a case-by-case basis, I’m saying ‘goodbye’ to the senior model program that I nurtured for all these years. Instead, I’m creating a totally new kind of team, full of girls who want to give selflessly and grow in the process. In a culture literally choking on self-promotion and self-absorption, the Within Team will go a different way. It’s going to take a group of girls who finally want to look outside of themselves, and bring real transformation to others. One thing I know for certain, Beauty Within will bring more lifelong relationships, more impact, more meaning, and more of the stuff that really matters. All of our lives will be forever changed along the way. We’ll use our gifts and talents to shine light in dark places. While more details will be forthcoming, I’m inviting all interested high school Junior girls to my farmhouse to hear the complete vision in January, and decide if it’s right for them.
