It never happened That we sat jolly together- Rubbing shoulders, whispering sweet nothings, Smiling at ourselves and the world around, Killing time looking at each other, Collecting sweet memories. It never happened That, between a cup of tea In my hand, and one in yours, I got to seek your smile, measure your laughter And bag your happy confessions Or your sad achievement. It never happened That we walked together, Either in lovely silence, or full of wondrous debate; No tumultous fights featured handsomely in our story, We remained all too separate- You walked your way, I dragged myself on mine. That we sat in the same classrooms, Read the same poets, or worked the same labs, Shared friends alike, or chemicals; Interests, affinities, frustrations, projects, ambitions; That anything common and shared came our way- It never happened. That we sat on the library steps Or traversed the lawns and the greens; That the benches monopolised by couples And those pathways favoured by lovers Ever got to acknowledge our presence- It never happened. That you laughed at my sweet lies And made a face at my jealous tantrums; That you took me home, and asked me to behave And presented me before your parents; That a photographer clicked at us, and we both smiled- It never happened. You never made tea for me And I never got to say how bad it was! Never did you relieve your travails before me Giving me a chance to say, how silly you are! That you ever snuggled up close to me, and became mine- It never happened.. (WHAT HAPPENED?)
