It seems Scottish Wildcats are not as rugged as we once supposed. Rather than harsh mountain conditions, the cats prefer grassland and lightly forested areas where rabbits and voles are abound. According to a recent survey by the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, Scottish Wildcats avoid heavy snowfall in winter, boggy ground in summer and do not even like to get their paws wet! This preference can bring them into the lowlands of Scotland and in close contact with human habitation and domestic cats. Interbreeding with domestic cats and road traffic accidents contribute to declining numbers of the Scottish Wildcat. The total Scottish population of Wildcats is thought to be under 400.
