It should be noted that Native American issues and offenders get comparatively little attention by scholars or policy makers, because they are overshadowed by the large numbers of African American and Hispanic offenders in the system. It is also important to note that Native American overrepresentation is not just an American problem. This same trend of overrepresentation is found in every country where an indigenous population has been overrun by an invading group. In addition to the United States, it is found, for example, among the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, the Aborigines of Australia, the Maoris of New Zealand, and the indigenous peoples of Papua New Guinea, Scandinavia, Japan, Russia, and many African countries.
