It turned out that all the troubles that I had on my old Linux/Windows notebook could be explained as a consequence of a broken/corrupted harddisk. After changing the harddisk, I was able to install the system in a snap. Lesson: Always have a spare harddisk handy, especially when you try to fix something after 10 pm. Also, it turned out that the frequent internet outages that I experienced for a week now could be explaned by a broken wireless router. After replacing the router, my DSL troubles seem gone. Lesson: Always have a spare wireless router in your closet (which I did).
