It was 3 years ago that I was in Iowa City at a womens leadership conference. I knew the main speaker was Maya Angelou. I was excited to hear her but nothing prepared me for the impact she would have on my business SPLURGE Boutique and myself personally. She came out on stage dressed in a floor length black evening gown and long pearls, you could hear a pin drop in a room of 1000 women. She started reciting her famous poem Phenomenal Woman and the oxygen left the room. She was so powerful and AMAZING...so humble and wise. I wanted to remember every moment of that evening. Driving home, I realized this poem was so perfect because it was how I felt about every woman who I had photographed at my studio Davis Photography 1994-2010 and now my boutique SPLURGE. The staff and I immediately put a plan of action to work...I wanted this poem to touch everybody who walked in this store to give them a lift, to see them smile. This is our tag line and the way we feel at SPLURGE...We style Phenomenal Women. I was saddened today to hear of her passing. She was a true spirit who sincerely empowered people and spread hope to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her or reading her work.
