It was 50 years ago today, at 12:30 PM (EST) that shots rang out in Dealey Plaza bringing an end to Camelot, the life of our 35th President and forever changing the American political landscape, our culture and our view of the future. As a six year old boy growing up in what was then a sleepy Midwestern capital, I was shaken by those events and to this day remember where I was when I received that horrid news. As with millions of Americans I look back on that day and those horrific events and am always struck with the same chord what if the assassination never happened. Barrowing from Don McLeans classic American Pie (a tale surrounding the loss of another American icon, Buddy Holly and the 60s impact on a generation of American culture) it was the day the music died for a generation of Americans. It was the day we lost our 35th president, made a young bride a widow, left two young children fatherless, and an entire nation seemingly lost its innocence and sense of direction overnight. Next to Neal and Buzz walking on the moon, it was the day that defined the 20th century in America. As you listen to Don McLeans American Pie, sit and reflect on the bad news on the door step...mourn the loss of our 35th president and the inordinate impact that event has had on America since that deadly day in Dalllas.
