It was 60 years ago this month that the 1954 Lockhart Lions won the first of three consecutive district football championships. After winning their district 23AA title that year, the Lions defeated Navasota 21-6 for the bi-district crown before falling to eventual state champion runner-up Killeen 13-6 in their regional game. The 54 Lions ended their season with a 9-2 record. In what Louis Mohle Jr. would later call the, Glory Days Ahead and under legendary LHS Coach Jesse Red Burditt, the Lions would also capture district football crowns in 1955 & 1956 as well. In those days only the district champion itself advanced to the playoffs.
