It was a time later when a large blast shook both the men awake to a panic, sending sand flying all over. Coughing, Darien could see nothing through the thick smoke of the aftermath, yet somehow managed to instinctively stumble his way over to Omar, quickly clambering to its back. As the dust started to settle, however, he saw that Jhin had been quicker, hearing the galloping through the sand off in one direction. “This way, Darien!” came Jhin’s voice, and Darien wasted no time in chasing after, turning sharply before pushing his steed to gain on his companion. As he began to catch up, Darien dared to turn his head and peek back. Through the waning smoke, he saw two indefinable, shadowy figures upon large steeds. The were no small size themselves, of deepest black and horns curling upwards from their head, with mere slits for eyes the glowed a sickly green. Something like the ghosts found in fictional stories, they seemed to be only half there, blending with the night. Despite the simplicity in their nature, the sight and presence filled Darien with fear, and he aptly returned his attention forward. “Are those dark soldiers?” “If we could only be so lucky. No, there are Knights of the darkness.” “Dark Knights?!” Was there really such a thing. Well, obviously- yes. But really, why was this happening? He direly wished for the peons of soldiers back from Bale. Jhin sped his horse up even more now, literally straining the poor beast, and Darien was forced to do the same in order to keep up. “Yes. They are physically superior to the soldiers, and are much more intelligent. In exchange not only foe their souls, but a bit of their free will, they serve as troop leaders for the soldiers.” “Wonderful…” Darien replied as his spirits sank further. He glanced back once more, only to see that the pair was gaining on them. His heart pounded faster, so much that he though it might burst from his chest. That may just be a mercy. The closer the knights got, the more overwhelming the sensation of fear was. A look at Jhin showed that the man was just as pale and scared as he was. Before long, the knights were at their heels, a cold chill sweeping over them, intertwined with the echoed grunts of their shadowy steeds. Omar and Beau were frantic now, going crazy as nausea over-swept both the man and beast. Darien knew- there was no way they were going to escape this. The next few seconds were like an eternity. Darien’s head pounded, a hollow sound filling his ears. His stomach churned as his surroundings blurred and began to swirl. He found himself gasping for breath, while at the same time trying not to breathe in the putrid fumes that surrounded them. Finally, his body grew numb, and he slid from his horse in a tumble, hitting the sand hard before darkness overtook him.
