It was at this point that I was contacted by Kim Thomas to take over the Farrier care and management of Phoenix. After looking at him, it was obvious to me at that time that the course of correction was not going to happen in just one shoeing or procedure and that it was going to take several visits. At the first shoeing I was able to adjust the PA enough that Phoenix was comfortable and about 65% soundness. He started to do much better as the days went by and started being turned out and enjoying pasture life. Right before the next shoeing, Phoenix developed an abscess. This is common in horses with these problems but can be very costly in terms of impeding progress and improvement to the hoof and the needed angles. I was able to treat the abscess and get it under control, but the result was leaving Phoenix very sore and compromising his sole at the tip of the coffin bone. Finally after several weeks of treatment, I was able to set a modified shoe. It was a custom made egg bar welded to a wedge and then shaved to give the right angle that was needed. Due to the minimal hoof wall the shoe was glued on and the nails were set on the outside of the hoof wall and then glued to the wall. You can see from the video just how good Phoenix is walking and moving. The abscess has slightly flared up causing Phoenix discomfort. He is going to be taken to Dr. Jennifer Wickline at Equine Veterinary Services for an antibiotic program to get rid of this abscess, as well as getting current x-rays and observation so we can keep Phoenix moving forward in the right direction.
