It was clear while Andrew was in rehab that he would need a standing frame. It is crucial that patients with paralysis be helped to stand as soon as medically stable following the illness or injury. They should stand every day for gradually increased lengths of time. The reasons why paralyzed patients must stand are too numerous to mention. Among the most important are the prevention of contractures (a permanent shortening of the muscle), improved range of motion, reduction of muscle spasticity, prevention of osteoporosis, improved circulation, reduction of lower extremity edema, pressure relief to vulnerable areas to help prevent pressure sores, improved bowel and bladder regularity, fewer kidney stones and decreased risk of chest infections and pneumonia. Even patients who are comatose who are helped to stand have shown improved motor response, and possibly shortened periods of unconsciousness. Andrew was able to stand for about a minute at a time while in rehab before his blood pressure dropped and he was forced to sit again. He needs to be able to stand daily and build up the time in the frame to receive the many benefits a standing frame offers. For months, weve been waiting patiently, hoping that insurance would provide a standing frame for him since it is so critical to his health. But recently we found out his insurance denied it. The cost for a standing frame is $6000. This fundraising page has been extended until Andrews 20th birthday. We have had several people contact us saying they wanted to give. The van that was purchased for Andrew has changed his life and now the hope is to get the frame that will improve his overall health. It is our hope to be able to purchase this critical piece of equipment for him by his birthday.
