It was nice to hear the reference on BBC Northern News last night to the men of the sailing fishing boat The Wanderer from Peel in the Isle of Man who came to the rescue of the stricken Lusitania in 1915, taking 160 on board and towing two more life boats to Ireland where powered ships came out to assist. It was mentioned that the Manchester Manx Society had medals struck for the crew of the Wanderer. As a long-time President of that society I can honestly say that was our proudest hour to honour such heroic men who could have also been blown out of the sea by the U boat,a sitting duck as a sailing boat, but with some dismay that none of the relevant governments thought to do the same.
