It was on this day, November 6, 1961, that Jimmy Dean started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Big Bad John, a No.2 on the UK chart. Jimmy went on to present a prime time variety show on US TV. The country music Hall Of Famer was known not only for his singing, but for his television series, The Jimmy Dean Show, which also gave puppeteer Jim Henson his first national media exposure. In 1969, he founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company with his brother Don. A Virginia resident since 1990, Dean was inducted into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997. Former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore appointed Dean to the Virginia Board of Game and Inland Fisheries, which oversees the states wildlife efforts and boating laws. He married Donna Meade Dean, a singer, songwriter, and recording artist, who helped him write his book 30 Years of Sausage, 50 Years of Ham.. The couple lived on their property at Chaffins Bluff overlooking the James River in Henrico County, on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia. Dean died at the age of 81, on June 13, 2010, at his Red Roof Inn in Varina, Virginia. He was survived by his wife Donna.
