It was reported that their relationship after this trip was unfriendly/frosty. Mao was hoping to gain financial backing of the Russians to help rebuild China along with supplies to create factories and industrialize China like the Soviets did in Russia. None of that happened, and Mao was said to be very disappointed with Russia and disliked Stalin from the time on despite their joint ventures to secure Communism in the world. It is may explain why Chinas policy of stay out of the fights/wars unless it threatened their borders despite being good friends with Russia. Relations with Russia got better once Stalin died. Mao never really trusted/respected him after that and blamed him for the struggles and issues that his country faced after China became the Peoples Republic. Again, fascinating history. Interesting to ponder what China might have become today if that visit to Russia had gone differently and Mao got the resources and money he was looking to receive from Russia. Would certain policies never been implemented? We know that it might have stopped the huge starvation that happened in China during the early years of communism. If they were in better relationship for communicating, Russia might have shared wisdom that might have keep China from doing things with their crops and work force that bungled the economy/food supplies of China in the 5 year plan that Mao implemented called The Great Leap Foward. That plan failed and was abandon after two years into it. It might have saved lives and we may never had had the so-called Cultural Revolution in China which cause many to suffer and some to die. Although when you look at China today compared to Russia, who is no long communist country (although Putin is try hard to bring it back), maybe the struggles and the lack of following the Russian form of communism is what helped Chinas communism survive this long to the point that although it is changing from how Mao envisioned it, it is alive, strong and thriving. Something to ponder.
