It was very discouraging the other day to run into a former student. This young woman had always wanted to be a teacher, and she taught for a few years, but took another job at a nonprofit. I taught her sister also-- an extremely bright girl who has given up teaching to stay home with her children, which is very important. But she says she will not return to teaching. Its not the classroom or the students that drive teachers to other careers! It is the nonsense that rains down on us from bureaucrats an people who think they know more about teaching than those of us in schools every day. I hope those in power will realize the mistakes they are making before its too late!
