It would appear that I have been posting material that has been viewed as negative and hurtful. I never intended to cause any of this, and I do apologize to any I may have offended. While contemplating this situation remembered a quote from one of my courses, and I believe that it sums up very nicely, how I fell into doing what I never intended to do. Here is that quote, and my sincere apology to any I have offended. Mechanically we think and feel, perceive and act, observe and judge, not from the interiority that the Spirit’s indwelling creates, but from ungrounded role expectations and/or from our unexamined ego needs. We act as though the authority entrusted to our care is our possession to be used according to personal whims or prejudices. Thus seduced, we betray the very purpose for which roles exist, namely the exercise of authority for the well-being of an institution in relation to both those serving in and those served by the institution. Anesthetized to the indwelling of the spirit, we become so politically correct and socially acceptable that inevitably our hearts wither; our minds become numb; our deeds routinized; our spirit dwarfed. Without knowing it, we squander or abuse or neglect the authority placed in our care. We forget that authority vested in roles is intended to be a reliable resource for promoting the moral agency of a group. We forget that authority is intended to be a graced resource for the Spirit to speak to the community about its deepest longings and burning passion. Turner, M. (2005).
