Its 2015 and a year to look forward to for those of us who are interested in, and proud of, British history. We have centenaries of The Magna Carta, Agincourt and The Battle of Waterloo. There are a number of other significant anniversaries such as 75 years since Dunkirk. A good opportunity to encourage an interest in our history and also feel a bit of National pride. Without these events, and many others that Britain was involved in, the world would be a different, and I think, worse place. A year of celebration should be the plan. I say should be; in fact I anticipate a concerted effort, probably led by the BBC and Guardian to side-line all references to these events. They will either say that their importance is over-rated or that they are evidence of brutal British Imperialism. If they cant make the events disappear I guess theyll use another of their well honed tactics, complain that there were not enough ethnic minorities, LBGT or disabled people involved and therefore should not be covered. They choose to forget that these were very different times. Perhaps we should apologise to the French and rewrite history so that King John is portrayed as a nice man who stroked kittens. I will be celebrating any and all dates that I can, however loosely, justify.
