Its a shame to hear about so many home owners getting ripped off in this area. I come from a place where the majority of people are up front and honest. I run a quality roofing & construction company. I ask for Material cost and part of the labor up front... But I give the home owner the choice of paying for the material over the phone or riding with my to the supply warehouse to pay for it. I have ordered material out of pocket and home owners rip me off. I have ordered material without getting any part of labor up front and then show up to find someone else doing my work because well.... The home owner realized my material was cheaper but their labor was cheaper so they could save money. I have a Wife and Kids to support. I also have all my customers enter a binding work and payment agreement. This protects them if I was to cut corners and do a bad job. I then would owe them compensation. It also protects me from being shorted or ripped off. The tracks go both ways, But still it breaks my heart to hear of people getting done dirty whether its a home owner or a contractor just trying to provide for their family.
