Its always tempting when you go to a flea market or farmers market to pick up a special treat for your pup. Those antlers and hooves and bones would be a great treat for your dog, right? Wrong! Very hard treats, like the hard boiled bones, antlers, hooves and hard Nylabones are traumatic to dogs teeth. Ive lost count of how many fractured teeth weve seen in our puppy patients due to chewing on these items. Better to stick with slightly softer toys, like Kong toys, hard rubber bones or Booda bones. And for those who say that dogs regularly chew on bones in the wild, I say that dogs in the wild only live to be 3-5 years of age on average, so theyd die before the teeth became a problem. We want our pups to live a long, happy life--with good looking teeth!
