Its amazing how mass movements are absolutely impacted by very predictable forces in the United States: A news event that adds obvious complexities to a political discussion (the slaying of the NYPD officers) because media cant handle a movement with complexity. A movement somehow needs to have no contradictions in it as far as news is concerned and with a mass movement contradictions are always there. Weather or holidays (Occupy as well suffered through the winter break) A media that requires an ever shifting narrative of news items (if mass movements stay on message and strategy, they simply become old news). Other news events that take the focus off the movement. I would discount this stuff if it didnt absolutely impact movements and their energy. Frankly, the mediation of a movement (news reporting on the movement) absolutely impacts the movements perspective of itself. Maybe not core members but those that gravitate toward then just as soon away from it. Distraction and a quickly shifting media environment that moves at the pace of peoples attention make long term struggle very difficult.
