Its been 27 years to the day since the Whittier Narrows Earthquake. The 5.9 magnitude quake happened at 7:42am and had an epicenter in Rosemead. It occurred on the Puente Hills Thrust System, which was unknown at the time. 8 people were killed, and it was felt as far away as Las Vegas. It was the strongest earthquake in the L.A. area since the San Fernando quake in 1971. The most severe damage occurred in Whittier and Alhambra to unreinforced masonry. An aftershock measuring 5.3 struck 3 days later in an area northwest of the first one, killing an additional person. Another one measuring 4.7 happened the following February, leading to minor damage. What are your memories of that day?
