Its been a rough year for law enforcement. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 126 officers were killed in the line of duty this year, including 15 ambushes against law enforcement. For those of us outside of the law enforcement community, its hard to fully grasp the daily duties of the job. In 2010, I had the chance to ride along with the Arlington Police Department. It drastically changed my perspective of the police profession. And I think it will change yours as well. It is relatively easy to sign up for a ride-along with your local police department. Most departments require you to prove your residency and accept a background check before you are able to jump in the shotgun seat of a squad car. But do it. It is a great (and very fun) experience that will take you inside the life of your local police officers for a night. And you will appreciate them a little more afterwards! A1
