Its not often I agree with Slate, but I (mostly) do here. The mainstream parties and culture have made the issue a taboo subject, and in the vacuum, marginal political groups - some with malign views, racial and otherwise - have moved to define the argument and draw support. And Europeans have to face the fact that sharia is not some phenomenon of extremist Islam, but a central feature and as authoritative as anything else can be said to be.
