Its ok to be terrible at something when you first start, every great artist was at one point a terrible one. When I first started making beats/songs (15 years ago) I had a mini-disk four track, and only 2 mini-disks, so every time I wanted to make something new I had to delete something old. I did this for 2 or 3 years without ever releasing anything, and I believe that process taught me a valuable lesson. It reminds me of the sand mandalas that Tibetan Monks take painstaking efforts to create and then just wipe away, content with the knowledge & wisdom gained from the process, and the feeling of ones own growth regardless of the praise of others. To this day I have no record of any music that I created for the first 5 years of my career (all good, trust me it sucked). I guess the moral of my story is, if you want to become great at something, dont worry about being seen or heard for a while, just build on your craft until its undeniably strong (making sure to seek outside opinions from those you respect). That way when you do feel ready to release your art/music and look for support, it will most likely be there for you. Instant gratification is too easily offered by the internet nowadays, finish a song, throw it on the cloud, watch your friends and fam like and comment on it…. But in my opinion if you want to truly separate yourself from the pack, you have to stay in the woodshed, pound on your craft incessantly, and be hyper-focused on growth… If I was to transform this rant into a motto it would be, Dont get bitter, get better.
