Its strange how Billys fortunes have declined so rapidly, not so long ago he was on the crest of a wave, all smiles, waves to the crowd, every inch the man of the people. Now, it seems the majority of fans appear to want him sacked, even if that means giving him a substantial payout, Heres my explanation for what its worth. We know that BD has a massive ego, but I believe he also has an equally large inferiority complex, He cant deal with any thoughts of failure, in the past he has always blamed any lack of success on other people, (ND, the board, the acquisiton committee) This time he has had the full backing of a benevolent new owner, yes there is a massive injury list but the owner would back any short term loan signings that the manager wanted, so not really any one to blame. We once had another manager with a massive ego but he certainly didnt feel inferior to anyone, he was quite capable of managing big money signings and hard men, indeed, he realised that on the field you need the characters like Stuart Pearce, Kenny Burns to name just two, to give the side some steel, (can you imagine those players meekly playing on through a 5-0 drubbing by Derby) Where was the real steel when it came to the play offs, the really big games. BD appears to want a team that do exactly what he wants on the pitch, he does his homework on the opposition and plans to counteract their strengths, when it works (as it has) the players believe in him and the system but once it starts to go wrong (as it has) the players soon lose faith in the system and the manager. BD will never sign a hard man, someone who might stand up to him and question his tactics, planning etc. I think that sadly the genie is now out of the bottle, the players and supporters have seen the flaws in his character (arguing/barging in to the referee), The players have seen that his planning doesnt always work and that when things go wrong he has a bitter/nasty side to his character. Just a thought, albeit a long one.
