Its unfair to characterize the Employment Insurance program as one - TopicsExpress

Its unfair to characterize the Employment Insurance program as one that pays people to stay home. EI supports workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. No one wants to be without work, and Canadians should not be penalize when an employer lays them off. Statistics have shown that access to EI has become more difficult under Liberal and Conservative governments -- less than 4 in 10 unemployed Canadians are currently eligible. Even more astonishing is that successive governments have taken $57 billion from the EI fund, and directed it away from supporting employers and employees. Today I am attending a forum sponsored by the Atlantic premiers in which we are discussing the changes to EI and what impact they are having on our region. It is a robust consultation about how our communities are being negatively impacted by these unilateral changes. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the NDP to ensure that EI is accessible and that the program is there to benefit Canadians if they become unemployed. We can work towards creating a fiscally sustainable plan that contributes to economies in the Maritimes and in Canada and provides financial security to Canadians when the need it.
