It’s a cycle that has replayed itself since time immemorial, or at least since the invention of the Internet: You’re browsing along, minding your own business viewing funny cat gifs and naughty celebrity videos that have been leaked by their publicists, and suddenly you’re inundated with rumors of a new Bruce Springsteen album. And here we are again: The Web is abuzz this morning with talk of a new Springsteen album due out this January. Where this information is coming from is a little (OK, a lot) sketchy — cited most often are the ever-popular “reliable sources” and “rumor mill,” which are generally not nearly as reliable as Bernie Horowitz, who according to Gary Larson is the “they” in “that’s what they say.” (And if anybody has a scan of that old Far Side cartoon, please post it on our Facebook page.) My big fear is that this all started with this post over at fake news site en.mediamass.net. (Other recent headlines: “Bruce Springsteen to Be a Dad?” and “Bruce Springsteen’s Dog Recovering from Surgery.”) It’s not really a satire site so much as a site where they just make sh*t up. Regardless, if you’d like to weigh in on the rumor-mongering, you might want to try this thread on The Circuit at Greasy Lake. The buzz there is for the album in January and a European tour in the spring, although if there no U.S. dates first I can think of a few stateside fans whose heads might explode directly off the tops of their bodies. (You know who you are.) Most of what’s on the thread is probably a bunch of hooey, but they’re so nice and polite about it at Greasy Lake that it’s worth a visit anyway. As for reasons for hope, there are actually a few: Springsteen’s own comments about recording in Australia with Tom Morello, for one, and of course the already announced 2014 tour dates in Australia and New Zealand that seem positioned as a post-Wrecking Ball stint. Given those, the January timetable (same as Working on a Dream) would make sense. So maybe if we believe hard enough and clap our hands, it will actually happen.
