It’s been a while since I’ve shared a legendary Rainbow Music Hall story. Here goes... I was working back stage security one summer afternoon in the very early 80s when the lines outside the building for that night’s show started to form. As the crowd outside grew, a sidewalk preacher stood on a perch under a telephone pole at the edge of Evans Avenue. I was surprised how quickly he drew a crowd. The kids were more curious than anything, and some harmless banter was exchanged between the crowd and the preacher, though I dont believe any souls were exchanged. There were maybe 30 or so kids listening as he expanded his stance against “the devil’s music”, sighting scripture in support of his cause. Eventually a man in trench coat who seemed a bit older than the rest of the crowd began taking the preacher to task. The trench coat guy was correcting the preacher and sighting scripture more authoritatively, and in greater detail. The man in the trench coat had a simple message; that God was essentially indifferent to rock and roll lyrics, and more concerned with kids intentions. I may be fuzzy on this part, but it seems the preacher closed up shop pretty quickly when he realized he was outgunned in the scripture department. . The man in the trench coat guy was Stan Ridgeway, and that night’s show was Wall Of Voodoo. https://youtube/watch?v=ZS_CQkPavyc
