It’s with a really heavy heart that we have to announce that Bruno, the poor Rottweiler found in such terrible condition with the rotted paw has sadly lost his brave fight for life. Bruno was rescued by Anna Rizopoulou and her small group of animal welfare volunteers in Messinia after being found in a remote area. Bruno’s initial care was undertaken by the local vet until an offer was made to bring him to KAZ shelter near Athens, where he could be seen by a specialist orthopaedic surgeon for the surgery he needed to remove his injured leg. Unfortunately, Bruno was also infected with leishmaniasis, and because of the infection in his leg, the leishmaniasis and his very poor condition he was too sick and weak to withstand surgery. Bruno received all the treatment he needed for his infection and good food and love and care, maybe for the first time in his life, in the time since he was found, but sadly he was too weakened to regain the strength to fight his infection and the leishmaniasis. Sometimes, no amount of love and care is enough to undo the damage already done by so many years of neglect, and Bruno was suffering. He had a new outbreak of skin lesions and his leg was swollen and very painful, and the infection and disease left him too weak and sick to fight any more or to give him any hope of being able to withstand surgery to remove his leg. His carers, who had fought so hard to save him were forced to come to that hardest decision of all….to allow him to leave this cruel world surrounded in love, having had good food in his belly, a soft bed and a gentle hand to stroke him for the last weeks of his life. Bruno died in the arms of people who loved him, knowing that at last he mattered. RIP handsome boy, you will be sadly missed. We’re so sorry that we came too late for you Thank you to everyone who donated to Brunos care and veterinary treatment. Im sorry that we could not help him and that our love and money alone were not enough to save him. Sadly, not every story has a happy ending......but we will never give up trying.
