It’s worth noting; every government attempts to write our histories in blood. According to “them”, character is defined through sacrifice, from all sides of the battles. Wars are the benchmarks against which all other human actions are measured. Time is defined in skirmishes. It’s referred to as “The Vietnam Era”, “The Civil War Era”, pre- and post- this conflict or that one. Why is it World War II era music? Can it not be the big-band era war? Humanity is not defined in murder, however ubiquitous murder may be. If all words shared a common meaning, then all language would be meaningless, indistinguishable from the guttural grunts of the primitive and violent beasts that preceded us. No, it is not violence that defines our times. but rather our ability to transcend it. We are defined in our ascent, to rise above the meaningless struggle and into meaningful language, to see and to hear, to comprehend and conceive, to draw the line and show that we are done. To show we’ve found a better way. The good news is that despite what we are told, we are heading the right way. The bad news is that we haven’t yet arrived.
