Ive always been interested in the kosher dietary restrictions set - TopicsExpress

Ive always been interested in the kosher dietary restrictions set out for the Jews in the book of Leviticus (chapter 11). There were certain animals that they were forbidden to eat due to uncleanliness as so ordered by the God, Yahweh, though nothing was explained as to just how or why, other than holy decree, these creatures qualified as unclean. Biblical scholars of various and no faiths have reasoned that this would be a gods way- if He indeed existed- of protecting His people from certain bacteria, viruses, and diseases- some of which are extremely communicable and even fatal- in a time when medicine was nearly non-existent, perhaps until a time when (upon the coming of the Messiah thousand of years later) such diseases could be easily combatted. Some animals on the list include animals that have split hooves but do not chew the cud- like pigs- which carry the trichinosis which would have devastated ancient man. Other creatures such as shellfish are also understandable now as their unclean classification as they are scavengers (like vultures, which also are forbidden) which eat the carrion and excrement as well as cast-offs of other creatures. I cannot help but be brought back to my postulations on the subject with the report of the ebola outbreak theoretically being linked to the eating of fruit bats because yet another until-now inexplicably unclean animal disallowed from being consumed by Gods Chosen was/is, in fact, the bat. Did something thousands of years ago, before the invention of medicine, know something that we did not and something that with all our modern science are as yet ignorant of?
