Ive always wanted to do one of those post a song a day for a month things. And Im three days late, but Ill try! Name a song you like from a band you otherwise despise (or whereabouts): Some Kind of Wonderful by Grand Funk Railroad: https://youtube/watch?v=NP-UNSv4DLs Grand Funk Railroad is a band that is largely dependent on copying trends in a fairly banal way. Were An American Band seems lost amidst an endless number of songs about how great partying is, like a tamer Rock And Roll All Nite by KISS. Or in the case of The Loco-Motion, copying an already popular song by Little Eva, hoping that slightly louder instruments make the song sound more...something. Its hard to tell what the intent is. Its certainly noisier, more busy sounding, not somehow more rocking. Some Kind Of Wonderful (also a cover, so maybe it isnt that original either) isnt a perfect song to me either, as the instrumentation is kind of flat and subdued, and it doesnt really change (its almost all bass line). What is good about it is that it carries out its very basic love theme through in the lyrics and the vocal delivery. Talking about your baby, and saying shes out of sight, even by 1974 standards, is not very original, but its pleasant to the ear, its nice to know that the singer cares. The Can I get a witness part, or the my baby, my baby screams at the end, make him seem like a sympathetic character, and they help to make the rhythm of the singing sound varied without making it seem like an unpolished composition I would never pay to own the song or any Grand Funk album, but I find it to be a solid toe tapper in the car, and anything else by the band would be summarily ignored by me.
