Ive been doing some thinking about the difference between those - TopicsExpress

Ive been doing some thinking about the difference between those things eternal and those things temporal. Risky I know. Sometimes I think of things just for the heck of it. Call me a weirdo. First of all I believe in the God of the Bible from the depths of my being. The resurrection of Christ is eternal. What He accomplished will shine in the heavens for all of eternity. Yet, as people, fragile creatures that we are, we tend to view the world through a lense, or more precisely, through several lenses at once. Imagine viewing the world through a double lense, one colored with your culture ( temporal) and another covered with Christ and his teachings ( eternal). A thousand years distant in medieval Europe the church taught that people had to approach God through intermediaries, priest and pontiffs, in order to contact God. This of course arose from the tradition of serfdom and the need to ensure that the peasant masses didnt do much of their own thinking. Culture and religion sometimes equals error. Fast forward through the ages. Most preachers south of The Mason Dixon line preached that God created the black man to serve the white man. They used scriptures to support this thoroughly corrupt point of view. They viewed slavery through a cultural lense. See a trend? I dare say that many among us are guilty of this, viewing the world through a cultural lense and incorporating scripture to support our views. Wonder which political party God belongs to China. Who does God want to win the next election in Armenia? Is God on the side of the Unionists in Northern Ireland? Did God support the ancient Kings who claimed to rule by Divine Right. How ludicrous that men would fight and die to defend such an egocentric point of view. This is my request. The next time you start to use God and The Bible to support your views ask yourself a question. Is what I think really what God thinks? Am I really correct? Is this thing eternal or temporal? Maybe we should ask ourself what God thinks instead of assuming that God thinks what we think. Fire away!!! Im ready!!
