Ive been having the same conversation with a couple of people lately regarding doing cardio on an empty stomach. It has been suggested to me that doing cardio on an empty stomach after an overnight fast increases fat oxidation due to depleted glycogen/insulin and therefore increases fat loss. However, as is often the case, what theoretically happens at a cellular level doesnt always correspond to actual results. Alan Aragorn, Brad Schoenfield et al, just released a study which showed that there was no significant difference in body composition between those who performed cardio on an empty stomach or a full stomach!!! Just goes to show (again) that much more important than silly little nuances (like running on an empty stomach), is your daily energy expenditure and caloric intake. So in summary, do your cardio or dont (thats a separate issue), but whether youre full or hungry when you do it will make NO DIFFERENCE to your total fat loss.
