Ive been meaning to talk about Robin Thicke for a minute, but then - TopicsExpress

Ive been meaning to talk about Robin Thicke for a minute, but then SCOTUS rulings happened and I got all distracted. It may be because I was trained in domestic violence victim advocacy and actually educated hundreds of people about domestic and intimate partner abuse, so I might be ultra sensitive to the issue. But the things that Robin is saying in his new music and in public, and his actions in his newest music video are disconcerting. Im not saying that Robin abused Paula while they were together. But his supposed persistence is VERY familiar to me both personally and professionally in all the wrong ways. When someone asks you (repeatedly) to leave them alone or give them space and you dont? Thats not persistence. If a significant other threatens to harm themselves in any way because of their love for you? Thats not love. Thats emotionally abusive and manipulative. It is not ok. Sure, its music. And the sappy stuff is pretty standard for R&B. But lets call a spade, a spade. Robins behavior, or any other person who has done things like this, is inappropriate, unacceptable and abusive. There are so many women (and men!) in relationships with manipulative and abusive partners that either cant or wont define the behavior as abusive for whatever reason. Lets stop applauding it as cute or persistent, lets call it out dangerous behavior when we see it. Emotional abuse is abuse, period.
