Ive been reading stuff about these authors behaving badly off and on all day. And Ive been ruminating. Im gonna call it. The Top Offenders are GoodReads reviewers who are wannabe authors in YA and paranormal romance. Theyve been using the site for three years now to snark and mean-girl any author theyre jealous of. They also use snark to increase the popularity of their reviews and, therefore, their visibility to potential publishers. Yes, some authors have done some pretty stupid stuff. But Ill be honest. I signed up for GoodReads the month it started and Ive been beyond loyal in building and maintaining the site. But it has created a huge cancer in the publishing world by allowing a platform for and encouraging the behaviour that drives all of this. Its time that Amazon flex some muscle and revisit the sites code of conduct and mechanics. Im not leaving because Im not letting the MeanGirls win. But Im also not going to pretend this isnt a huge festering problem.
