Ive been thinking a lot this week about the Talmudic image of feathers being spread in the wind, and how there is no way to collect them. I could delete the post because of certain phrases I wrote that I regret. But that is not how forgiveness works. I realize that I said words this week that hurt, and a decent percent of them are words that need not have been said in order to get across my point. For the unnecessary hurt I apologize. For criticizing Open Orthodoxy for changes Ive heard/seen promised and not seen/heard happen, I am comfortable. I criticize United Synagogue, JTS, and all those branches of the spectrum that is Conservative Judaism. And I criticize because I care. That I should be upset about issues is okay. I very much regret many phrases that were said. Teshuvah (repentance) is a hard thing to do, and I hope that--even if few would--that some might accept my apology for making the tone too harsh when trying to speak about questions/problems that trouble me deeply. Ive already said this elsewhere: A followup piece is to be published next week, and that will hopefully clear up a few things in a way so as to continue this conversation in a challenging and serious but less painful way that permits us to open our ears, eyes, and hearts. For the meantime, a shabbat shalom to all.
