Ive been thinking and theres something I would like to say. Hear me out to the end. It may or may not be a surprise to you that Im a Mormon. Many people have a lot of ideas and opinions about what Mormons are and about what we believe. After a conservative Mormon presidential candidate and tension over the issue of gay marriage, the LDS church has gotten a lot of attention in the media for the last couple years. I know that in my hometown, other churches had whole classes about THE MORMONS. Pastors worry about the spiritual well-being of their congregations and about sheep stealing of their flocks, and rightfully so. For the last 10 months Ive been working at my churches Missionary Training Center (MTC). The MTC is where they send all the Mormon missionarys to learn how to be a missionary, before letting them loose to prey on innocents and unsuspecting strangers. ;) Im an actor/investigator there. I meet with missionaries and they talk to, interact with, and teach me as if I was not already a member. During my time there, Ive been amazing at the young men and woman I work with. These missionaries are young, inexperienced, ignorant, and often immature, but they leave their homes, families, lives, plans, and significant others to share what they believe with complete strangers, for no other motivation then love. They have experienced joy and happiness from living their faith and want nothing more then to share that happiness with others. No matter what our personal or religious beliefs are about the Mormon church, I believe that we owe these young missionaries our respect and love in turn. Please go out of your way to be kind to them. If you think they are wrong and miss guided, by all means, tell them so, but do it kindly. You might not believe in the message they bear, but we all believe in the love that motivates them. Their message might not change the world or make it a better place, but the love they share can. If you talk to them and they start to bug you, call me, and Ill tell you how to shack them loose (I have tons of practice :) ), but just talk to them.
