Ive come across this article on providing a battery backup for a Raspberry Pi. It could also be used to provide power to a Raspberry Pi used in a car (eg. to keep the Raspberry Pi running when you fill up at a service station). The article says that the use of an optocoupler was just because he had one handy, but doing so has the advantage that this could be used where the supply voltage is not particularly clean (such as the 12v in a car - I suggested an optoisolator as a possible way of monitoring for loss of supply voltage in the Raspberry Pi forums earlier this year). Youd probably want to add additional capacitors for the 7805 (see the datasheet) if using on a car supply rather than a regulated 12v source and ALWAYS USE A SUITABLE FUSE or polyfuse if connecting to a car power supply. Most cigarette lighter plugs have a max 10A fuse, but Id swap for a smaller one or add an additional fuse to be on the safe side. I havent actually tried this myself. repairhub.co.uk/content/resources/raspberry-pi-battery-backup
